Minneriya vs Kaudulla vs Hurulu — Which Safari Park Should You Choose?

Sri Lanka’s North Central Province is home to three remarkable safari destinations — Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park, and Hurulu Eco Park. While all three sit within the same elephant corridor and offer jeep safaris, each has its own unique character and experience.

Minneriya National Park Minneriya is the most famous of the three, largely thanks to its role as the primary stage for The Gathering. The park’s vast ancient reservoir attracts the largest elephant herds, particularly between August and October. Minneriya is also the busiest park, so expect more safari jeeps on busy days. Wildlife here includes elephants, sambar deer, axis deer, sloth bears, leopards, and a spectacular variety of water birds.

Best for: First-time visitors, large elephant gatherings, birdwatching.

Kaudulla National Park Kaudulla sits just beside Minneriya and offers a noticeably quieter, more intimate safari experience. With fewer vehicles on the trails, you get more time to observe wildlife without the crowds. The open grasslands surrounding the reservoir create stunning photography opportunities, especially during the golden hour. Elephants, crocodiles, jackals, and over 160 bird species are regularly spotted here.

Best for: Authentic uncrowded safaris, photography, peaceful wildlife watching.

Hurulu Eco Park Hurulu is the hidden gem of the three. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it holds the highest level of conservation status and offers the most forested, raw safari experience. Leopards and sloth bears are spotted here more frequently than in the other parks. It is ideal for travellers who want to venture off the beaten track and experience Sri Lanka’s wildlife in a truly untouched setting.

Best for: Off-the-beaten-path adventure, forest wildlife, leopard spotting.

Which Should You Choose? If this is your first safari in Sri Lanka, start with Minneriya for the elephants. If you prefer a quieter experience with equally stunning wildlife, choose Kaudulla. And if you are an adventurous traveller looking for something truly special, Hurulu Eco Park will not disappoint. Better yet — visit all three!
